Ride Within. Original painting 26” x 48”, brush-worked oil paints on canvas.
This was my second painting of Lou, Guido's brother. To me, part of the rider's gear is the sunglasses. Shades are a fashion statement. At every motorcycle show, at every rally and in every bike shop, there are sunglasses. Lou was wearing Big Dogs. I changed them to VooDoo because I thought it fit with the ghostly specter of the reflected bike. Only to learn later that there really is a company that makes VooDoo sunglasses. By that time, however, the painting was done.

The idea of painting a bike in sunglasses arose from my fascination with reflections and the challenge they represent to paint. I wanted to be as crisp as possible with the frame of the sunglasses and used very wet paint to achieve this. The actual lens both refracted and reflected light. The motorcycle itself I painted with drier paints loosely brushed on which gave the impression of the bike being in motion.

And of course there was the face which -given my years as a portrait painter- I naturally found a pleasure to do.
